Position: School Nurse

 

To Whom Responsible: Building Principals

 

For Whom or What Responsible: Minimizing absence due to illness and creating a climate of health and well-being in the school district.

 

Qualifications:  

  1. Licensed LPN or RN in the state of Missouri
  2. CPR Trained
  3. Possession of the knowledge, skills, abilities, and physical attributes necessary to perform the essential functions of the position.

 

Primary Responsibilities:

  1. First Aid & General Health of Students
  2. Record Keeping
  3. Health Instruction

 

Essential Job Functions: 

  1. First Aid & General Health of Students & Staff
  • Plan, organize, and coordinate a method of providing first aid and emergency care as well as the care of the ill student.
  • Assume responsibility for the maintenance of the health room, including ordering of supplies and equipment.
  • Follows district policy for administration of medications.
  • Monitors accident reports to identify potential hazards and encourage their elimination.
  • Administers first aid, care and comfort to ill or injured students as provided by written health policies and guidelines.
  • Measures and records vital statistics and symptoms of the students.
  • Maintains a record of all children seen for health care reasons.
  • Document nursing assessment and care on student health record.
  • Administer nursing and consultation to school personnel.
  • Assess and evaluate the health and developmental status of students through appropriate screening techniques.
  • Monitor initial screening programs in schools served and provide secondary screening prior to referral.
  • Assume responsibility for selection and referral of students identified by the screening process as needing medical or other care.
  • Plan and implement programs for students promoting self care, decision making, and wellness behavior.
  • Plan and implement school health guidelines for the child with handicapping conditions and chronic health problems, including the administration of medications.
  • Monitor the daily care of students with handicapping conditions.
  • Assist in identifying and reporting suspected child abuse and neglect.
  • Provide health checks to staff and wellness resources for staff members as needed.
  1. Policy & Record Keeping
  • Participates in the development and revision of written first aid and emergency policies.
  • Maintain health records and use the information accumulated to initiate preventive, remedial, or rehabilitative action.
  • Monitor pupil immunizations as required by law.
  • Record screening data and other significant information in cumulative health records.
  • Compile accurate data and utilize research for planning, implementing and evaluating school health programs.
  1. Health Instruction
  • Assist parents to learn about health problems and aspects of parent responsibility for the health care and maintenance of their children.
  • Provide teacher with accurate and up-to-date materials for classroom instruction.
  • Provide orientation, training, and direction for health aids.
  • Plan and implement programs for students promoting self care, decision making, and wellness behavior.
  • Plan, initiate, and monitor preventative programs.
  • Demonstrates effective human relations and communication skills.
  • Adheres to good safety practices.
  • Adheres to all district rules, regulations, and policies.
  • Other duties as required or assigned.

Terms of Employment: 174 school days plus 5-7 days to use prior to the start or after the school year.

 

Evaluation: Evaluation is conducted by the building principals according to board policies and the Concordia R-II adopted model of the performance based evaluation.
